Going to the dentist can be a scary and overwhelming experience for many children, especially if they have never been to a dentist before and don’t know what to expect. Yet, there are several ways we can work together to help make their dental visits less stressful for both of you. Dr. Ken Cory has several years of experience treating children and families and can help your child feel more comfortable during their appointments.

Preparing Your Child for the Dentist

  • Explain what will happen – One of the best ways you can prepare your child for their first visit to the dentist is to explain to them what will happen. Make sure to avoid saying any words such as “pain” or “scary” even if it is meant to be reassuring since they may focus on those words instead of what you are saying. While answering their questions, make visiting the dentist seem like it is something exciting that they should look forward to.
  • Brush and floss their teeth – As soon as your child gets their first tooth, it is important to help them brush and floss until they can do it themselves. Not only will this teach them good oral hygiene habits that will carry on into adulthood, but they will be used to someone taking care of their teeth and won’t be uncomfortable when the dentist does it.
  • Avoid sweet rewards – While promising your child a reward if they do well can be beneficial, taking them for ice cream or giving them candy can be harmful to their teeth, especially right after a cleaning. It will also get them into the habit of expecting these rewards after each dental visit.

How We Help

When your child comes in for their first appointment, and any others thereafter, we will also explain what will happen during their visit that day. Showing them how all of the machines and tools work can also make them feel more at ease when getting x-rays and cleanings.
