What to do if Your Child Has a Dental Emergency
A dental emergency is never fun, but it can be especially stressful if it involves your child. You probably have questions about what to do and how to handle some of the most common dental emergencies especially if you do not currently have a kid’s dentist in Montrose.
Dental Emergencies and Children
If your child has dental pain, contact us right away. Pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. It may indicate an infection caused by deep decay, a cracked tooth, or even a problem with the eruption of a tooth. The best way to help your child is for us to perform an exam in our Montrose dental office.
If your child breaks a tooth while playing sports or biting into something they shouldn’t, they may or may not experience pain. We should still treat your child and potentially seal the tooth with a crown or filling so that decay and more extensive damage does not occur. We will determine the type of restoration that will work best once we have an opportunity to perform a full exam.
A lost tooth can be stressful, but because kids are so active, it can happen. If your child loses a tooth, check to see if it is a baby tooth or a permanent tooth. If you do not know, follow the directions for a permanent tooth and contact us right away.
If possible, place the tooth in the gums and hold it there as you come to our office. Make sure you call us so that we know what is happening and prepare for your arrival. If placing the tooth back in the gums is not possible, place it in a small container with slightly warmed milk. We will often be able to save a permanent tooth, but will likely not try to save a baby tooth and will treat it instead with a space maintainer.
